For our literacy test this term we are writing a life cycle about a frog. This week we made a sample life cycle about a Cicada. Here is my writing⤵
The life cycle of a cicada
Charlotte Cooper
Cicadas are extremely fascinating creatures. The cicada life cycle can go on for 22 years! Cicadas can mostly be found in warm places such as Africa and the United states. The loudest cicadas are from North america. After turning into adults Females and male cicadas have 2-5 weeks to find a partner before predators find where they are. The song that male cicadas sing is called Tymble. Now let’s move onto the fascinating life cycle of the wonderful creature called Cicadas.
Life cycle
Egg
Cicadas have an interesting life cycle. See, They start off by getting laid into teeny tiny little eggs. After being laid the mother of all the cicadas finds a nice warm place to pass away. After that they hatch and make their way underground to digest the sap from the tree they were laid on (This stage is called a Nymph).
Nymph
Nymphs are extremely rare to find, especially in winter. While they are underground they become bigger and bigger for 17 years. Millions emerge to the service every year (If you were to stumble across one, you would see more million others).
Moulting
Then when the years pass they come up to the surface to moult into their adult forms (The moult kind of looks like bread crumbs when it gets crushed).
Adult
When they become their adult stage they spend 2-5 weeks looking for a partner to mate with. Male cicadas sing to attract Female cicadas, females click their wings to respond and to tell them where they are. When they find a partner they mate and the female lays millions and millions of eggs.
Cicadas are extremely interesting creatures. Their life cycle could go on For generations. They are extremely kind and would never bite you. They even have a special voice box that can help them sing in a very beautiful way. Make sure not to be near a cicada when they are singing because it could deafen you!
